“Not Far from the Tree” is hosting a fundraiser on Wed Nov 10 at the Shamba Foundation at 48 Yonge St (at Wellington). Their efforts to plant urban community orchards in Toronto parks (such as the Ben Nobelman Park) and other civic lots are underscored additionally by the astoundingly successful, volunteer-based fruit harvest of elsewise under appreciated fruits (unless you’re a bird or squirrel) from our own T.O backyards…weighing in for the 2010 pick at a whopping 19,676 lbs. The pick is divided between food banks, pickers and tree-owners, and includes cherries, mulberries, plums, apples, pears, grapes, and ginko nuts.
Former Toronto Mayor David Miller, Chefs Jamie Kennedy, Mark Cutara, Carole Ferrari as well as Claire Tansy (Food Editor of Chatelaine Magazine) will be there in force, dishing out good vibes and elderberry cocktails amidst a silent auction and apple cider pressings. $50 admission.
