The large, rectangular holes in the old cedar tree near The Nook, can only be the work of Pileated Woodpeckers. I suppose a positive spin on the eventual downing of that grand old tree that lines the driveway, is that there’ll be more sunshine through the thick forest, and a huge supply of cedar kindling for the woodstove.
All the same, I love that big old tree, and will miss it. Birdwatching guests, however, are in for a treat. Check out some birds in action ( plus a game warden’s cute North Florida accent ) in this video . The live show of North America’s largest species of woodpeckers goes on right outside the windows of The Nook, and is well worth the trek. Hikers wanting to stay awhile need only call if interested in weekend packages (still at pre-season rates) . The carpenter ants living in the tree, however, had best move on.
